Restoration Case Study 1
The Research
After a bit of research, we discovered that the panel had been removed from a deconsecrated church in Manchester and ended up on eBay. By the looks of the damage someone had been taking pot shots at the window with an air rifle.
Preparation
The first job when the panel arrived was to square it up on the bench and flatten the lower section which was considerably bowed. All the broken panes were taped both sides. This is to ensure they didn’t fall apart when the pieces were separated.
Rubbing
Next a rubbing was taken, and then the drawing hard lined in pen and each piece numbered.

Then the painstaking task of separating the glass panes from the lead.
Clean and layout
The salvageable glass panes were soaked in hot water, then scrubbed with fine wire wool.

They were then logged, labelled and placed in their respective positions on the drawing.
Re-painting & Re-leading
The broken pieces were repainted, 27 panes in total were damaged beyond repair. With all broken panes replaced, and all cleaned and accounted for it was time to start re-leading the panel.

Once finished it was cemented and polished.
Inspection and Shipping
After a final inspection, the panel was crated up and shipped to its final destination in the USA.

Judging by the feedback we received our client was very happy with the results!
